Zatanna in Ravenclawby ~RichardCox

So, in December I mentioned offhandedly that I would like to draw DC Comics' Zatanna as a Ravenclaw house member. As I pretty much never have time to work unless it's commissioned, I was lucky someone took the bait and asked me to do the piece.

My original intent was to make the piece more pinup-y, with a big grin, squeezing the books all tightly to her, leg kicked up, all of that. But the more I though about it, the more that read "schoolgirl" and neither Zatanna nor Ravenclaw. So I edged more towards somethign more naturalistic, less exaggerated. A straightforward "Hello, I am very smart and I like to learn." pose and expression.

So, how to reconcile differences between Zatanna and the Hogwarts uniform without compromising either? My approach was modifications to the Hogwarts schoolgirl outfit. I removed the tie for Zatanna's bow-tie, but included the Ravenclaw house colors, in plaid. I also stretched out the sweater a bit across the bosom, not necessarily to draw attention to the breasts, but to emulate her stage uniform a bit, with the corset and vest she wears. She needed a wand, so I let her keep her stage magicians wand. I lost the top hat as it was really out of place with the rest of her attire, but I did waffle on it a little.

The textures and patterns were all great to work with, and seem to compliment one another well. Your really sometimes have to work to find a balance, and not go overboard a bit.

Drawing and designing plaid well is hard. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Perfectly awesome!

I am glad you changed it. I like a good sexy-fun pin-up as much as the next guy, but this is just perfect.

Her uniform is different because she is an exchange student this year.

I agree about the top hat and likewise agree it doesn't fit. The only way I could think of putting it in would be a top hat brooch she could wear as jewelry or have a Hogwarts style crumply top hat on a shelf in the background, but again either is just superfluous... what you have here is perfect

It looks very nice, but you should have included the fishnets, if only in the gloves version. As it stands, it's just a hot dark haired girl in a tweaked Hogwarth's uniform, with noting that actually says "Zatanna", at least to me.
